As of 2019, there are 2,772 kilometres (1,722 mi) of roads in Mauritius, of which 1,140 kilometres (710 mi) are main roads, 913 kilometres (567 mi) are secondary roads, 104 kilometres (65 mi) are motorways and the remaining 615 kilometres (382 mi) are made up of other types of roads. The percentage of paved roads is 98%.

A railway system existed in Mauritius from the 1860s until 1964. In 1956 the decision was made to close the railway due to unprofitability. At this time, Mauritius Government Railways had 146 km (91 mi) of 1,435 mm ( 4 ft in) ( standard gauge) track and 47 locomotives. Upon the system's creation it envisioned to create a system that was accessible and environmentally friendly. It is a smaller network in comparison to other African nations, but it is planned to have a total of 19 stations once completed.
