In 2008, it was one of the five Asian Pacific Islander neighborhoods ( Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Historic Filipinotown, Koreatown, and Thai Town) in the city that received federal recognition as a Preserve America neighborhood.
Greater Los Angeles is also home to the largest number of Filipino immigrants (16 percent of the total Filipino immigrant population of the United States), as of 2011. Filipinos are the largest group of Asian Americans in the region. The City of Los Angeles designated a section of Westlake as Historic Filipinotown in 2002.
In August, Historic Filipinotown is designated by Los Angeles 2003 , Philippine Republic Act No. 9225, also known as the Citizenship Retention and Re-Acquisition Act of 2003 enacted, allowing natural-born Filipinos naturalized in the United States and their unmarried minor children to reclaim Filipino nationality and hold dual citizenship.
The Historic Filipinotown Eastern Gateway spans Beverly Boulevard near the 1st Street Bridge and is intended to serve as a monument to the Filipino American community.
