It is a small- to medium-sized, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub up to 2 m (7 ft) tall [3] that is native to the eastern United States.
Buxus sempervirens is an evergreen shrub or small tree growing 1 to 9 m (3 to 30 ft) tall, with a trunk up to 20 centimetres (8 in) in diameter (exceptionally to 10 m tall and 45 cm diameter [6] ). Arranged in opposite pairs along the stems, the leaves are green to yellow-green, oval, 1.5–3 cm long, and 0.5–1.3 cm broad.
The shrubs have green shoots with small deciduous trifoliate leaves 5–15 millimetres (1 ⁄ 4 – 5 ⁄ 8 in) long, and in spring and summer are covered in profuse golden yellow flowers 20–30 mm (3 ⁄ 4 – 1 + 1 ⁄ 8 in) from top to bottom and 15–20 mm wide. Flowering occurs after 50–80 growing degree-days.
