The Irish were in all boroughs except Staten Island I guess. Manhattan just think of Hells Kitchen. Sure it was mostly Irish up until the 1970s. Queens was packed with Irish in Woodside, Sunnyside, Maspeth. Bronx had plenty, mostly in Woodlawn. Brooklyn no real total Irish hood but plenty spread out and about. BUT THERE ARE NO IRISH HOODS IN 2024.
Others seem to come and go with no problem. I think the ones who come and go just go back and forth a couple of times a year and do it legally. There was a huge influx of illegal Irish in the 1980's and 1990's.Some went back to Ireland when the Irish economy took off but many stayed because they had built lives here.
No, there are not a large number of Irish moving to the US. In 2012, there were 128,496 Irish Immigrants in the US. In 2022, there were 119,836 Irish Immigrants in the US. Yeah honestly… it is kind of a lot. That is 2% of Ireland’s population already living in US…. I am surprised it is that high.
The answer is, no. There are fewer Irish immigrants now than there were 10 years ago. There are fewer 10 years ago than there were 10 years before that. That doesn't mean that, none whatsoever are coming. Just more Irish Citizens are going back to Ireland than are coming here. In 2022, the DHS reported that 1,366 Irish Immigrants came to the US.
For those are truly Irish cities, while Boston and Quincy boast this large number of Irish immigrants ((both legal and illegal!)), and this rich tradition steeped quite deeply in Irish culture, lore, pubs, stores and gathering spots unmatched in the entire nation ((especially the Dorchester neighborhood in Boston!))!
Thats what I heard too. It is true, a lot of white men in jail are of Irish descent all across America even in states like California where theres not as much Irish-Americans like in the North-East they are the majority, maybe its because they come from lower middle class and lower class backgrounds, a lot grow up in rough neighborhoods, mostly blue collar, I know many white prison gangs were ...
Western Irish accents are, I think, heavily influenced by the phonology of the local Irish dialects spoken there until recently. Irish accents, no doubt, played a part in making up some of what we no know as American accents - and 'General American', the 'neutral' American accent (equivalent to 'Received Pronunciation' in England).
I married an Irish-American from Fair Lawn, which might sound funny because Fair Lawn is primarily known for its Jewish population. But there was a significant group of Irish people who moved there a in the 50s and 60s from Washington Heights, Inwood, and Jersey City, and they all went to St. Anne's Catholic Church.
The Westies are still around, of course not nearly as powerful as they once were. They weren't the Irish mob anyways, after Featherstone and all of them got in all hell started, Mickey Featherstone was named the MOST dangerous man in NYC in the 1970s, not the most dangerous white man, the most dangerous MAN, they considered him worse then Barnes or Lucas in Harlem.
