William May Wightman. Bishop William May Wightman (1808–1882) was an American educator and clergyman. He served as the President of Wofford College from 1854 to 1859. He served as the Chancellor of Southern University in Greensboro, Alabama (now known as Birmingham–Southern College and located in Birmingham, Alabama) from 1860 to 1866.

Carlisle Military School was established in 1892 at Bamberg, South Carolina, as The Carlisle Fitting School of Wofford College and closed in 1977. This school was named in honor of Dr. James H. Carlisle, who was the president of Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina (1875–1902) and one of the most preeminent educators in the history of South Carolina.
He served as the President of Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina, from 1848 to 1850. He then taught English, French, and history at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina, in 1850-1851. In 1851, he joined the Board of Trustees of Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The university was founded as South Carolina College on December 19, 1801, by an act of the General Assembly after Governor John Drayton pushed for its foundation on November 23, 1801. The establishment of a publicly funded college at the capital was intended to unite and promote harmony between the Lowcountry and the Backcountry.
