An “Uncle Tom” is used as an insult for black people who are considered to be too subservient or who are passive against abuse suffered due to being black. Basically, a “sell out.” In the original novel, “Uncle Toms Cabin”, by Harriet Beecher Stowe, the character was a depicted as hero with immense personal strength and morals.
