    So the answer then, was to select that TOP switch to "off", make sure all other selections are off, then select "Volume". When you do this, you will only be able to see 2 icons. Go ahead and select your second choice. (I prefer Volume and Network.) The rest of the icons are there, you just have to press the "^" to see them.
