Prices fluctuate all the time. Level 1 glamour exclusive crafted gear is often expensive because the materials are from treasure maps. Also pvp has a lot of good looking gear that's easy to obtain if you play a few games. So you take your heavy, ugly piece of armor. Wear it. Take your pretty glamour item. Glamour it OVER the ugly piece. Now you have the stats of the ugly with the look of the pretty. It's for situations where you like the look of a level 15 piece, but are level 70, and the stats on the low level piece don't even compare.

The armoire is for specific items, like event items, the stuff you get from veteran rewards, etc. It's free storage so if something can go in there, put it in there. Otherwise everything else has to take up a spot in your glamour dresser. Another significant difference is with respect to dyes. Dyeable items placed in the armoire do not retain dyes.

Glamour Plate Not Applying. [Discussion] For some reason, my glamour plate is refusing to apply Ghost Baroque Trousers of Fending over my Shire Custodian pants. I'm on a class at a high enough level that can use that glamour (63 WAR), and it seems to work fine elsewhere (though it won't go on some low level crafting gear I tried it on for yucks).
Hence why the glamour dressers exist only in solo instances (inn rooms, Grand Company squadron barracks, etc.), where the instance itself is (mostly) handled client-side, and you can kind of dodge that issue by virtue of having the few server-side things (retainers, glamour dresser, etc.) not need to be in an overall shared zone's memory.
