The island is part of the Cameroon line of volcanoes and is located off the Cameroon coast, in the Bight of Biafra portion of the Gulf of Guinea .
The National University of Equatorial Guinea (UNGE, Universidad Nacional de Guinea Ecuatorial in Spanish) is a public institution of higher education, being one of the main universities of Equatorial Guinea in Central Africa. It has a main campus in Malabo as well as a unit in Bata. Its current Rector is Filiberto Ntutumu Nguema Nchama.
