Biography. Mendive was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1944. His family practiced La Regla de Ocha, or Santería. A mulatto, he cherishes his Yoruba roots from the West coast of Africa. [1] In 1963, he graduated from the San Alejandro Academy of Plastic Arts, Havana.
