Lefkada ( Greek: Λευκάδα, Lefkáda, [lefˈkaða] ), also known as Lefkas or Leukas[ 2] ( Ancient Greek and Katharevousa: Λευκάς, Leukás, modern pronunciation Lefkás) and Leucadia, is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea on the west coast of Greece, connected to the mainland by a long causeway and floating bridge.
Lefkada (Greek: Περιφερειακή ενότητα Λευκάδας) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of Ionian Islands. The capital of the regional unit is the town of Lefkada. The regional unit consists of the islands of Lefkada, Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos and several smaller islands, all in the Ionian Sea.
Greece has many islands, [Note 1] with estimates ranging from somewhere around 1,200 [1] to 6,000, [2] depending on the minimum size to take into account. The number of inhabited islands is variously cited as between 166 [3] and 227. [2] The largest Greek island by both area and population is Crete, located at the southern edge of the Aegean Sea.
Today, all the islands are part of the Greek region of the Ionian Islands ( Ionioi Nisoi ), except Kythera, which is part of the region of Attica. Kerkyra has a population of 103,300 (including Paxoi), Zakynthos 40,650, Kefallonia 39,579 (including Ithaca), Lefkada 22,536, Ithaki 3,052, Kythera 3,000 and Paxi 2,438.
Porto Katsiki ( Greek: Πόρτο Κατσίκι, "goat port") is a beach on the Ionian island of Lefkada, Greece. The name is said to be because formerly only goats could reach this area. The beach is famed for its landscape and clear blue sea. It is located at the bottom of a concave pale cliff. It is 35 km from Lefkada town, near Athani village.
