It's a given that Sam is a troubled young man, and maybe his parents were blinded to the extent of his troubles. Regardless, his act was cruel beyond measure.

Family and friends were very anti-gay. He probably secretly loved ocsa and Blaze. Seems like Blaze outed him without his permission and he flipped out. I don't think it was a hate crime in the sense that he specifically targeted him due to sexual orientation but more over the shock of being outed.
