Fuel pump. A fuel pump is a component used in many liquid-fuelled engines (such as petrol/gasoline or diesel engines) to transfer the fuel from the fuel tank to the device where it is mixed with the intake air (such as the carburetor or fuel injector ). Carbureted engines often use low-pressure mechanical pumps that are mounted on the engine.
Vapor lock. Vapor lock is a problem caused by liquid fuel changing state to vapor while still in the fuel delivery system of gasoline -fueled internal combustion engines. This disrupts the operation of the fuel pump, causing loss of feed pressure to the carburetor or fuel injection system, resulting in transient loss of power or complete stalling.
Hydrolock. Hydrolock (a shorthand notation for hydrostatic lock or hydraulic lock) is an abnormal condition of any device which is designed to compress a gas by mechanically restraining it; most commonly the reciprocating internal combustion engine, the case this article refers to unless otherwise noted. Hydrolock occurs when a volume of liquid ...
Carburetor. A carburetor (also spelled carburettor or carburetter) [ 1][ 2][ 3] is a device used by a gasoline internal combustion engine to control and mix air and fuel entering the engine. [ 4] The primary method of adding fuel to the intake air is through the Venturi tube in the main metering circuit, though various other components are also ...
The basic working principle of an air-operated double diaphragm pump. Cross-section sketch of diaphragm fuel pump Air-operated double diaphragm pump. A diaphragm pump (also known as a Membrane pump) is a positive displacement pump that uses a combination of the reciprocating action of a rubber, thermoplastic or teflon diaphragm and suitable valves on either side of the diaphragm (check valve ...
British Airways Flight 38 crash-landed at London Heathrow in 2008 after its fuel lines became clogged with ice crystals.. In an internal combustion engine, fuel starvation is the failure of the fuel system to supply sufficient fuel to allow the engine to run properly, for example due to blockage, vapor lock, contamination by water, malfunction of the fuel pump or incorrect operation, leading ...
