WOKW was for much its history the sister station of AM 1160 WCCS, located in Homer City, Pennsylvania. WCCS first went on the air in 1983 under a partnership by two former radio station managers, Ray Goss of Indiana and Mark Harley of Clearfield; "Raymark" is an amalgam of their first names.

WDAD enjoyed a long history of success in its hometown, despite two aggressive competitors, WCCS in Homer City, and WLCY-FM in Blairsville, south of Indiana, both of which came on the air in the early 1980s. Coincidentally, WCCS co-founder Ray Goss had served as General Manager for WDAD and WQMU for 15 years before leaving to start WCCS in 1981.
For many years, this station was known as WYSN, "Sunny 101". Licensed to Central City in Somerset County, the station first went on the air October 19, 1972 as WCCS, whose calls are used today by an AM station north of Somerset County in Homer City.
